The General Committee is composed of the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Organizing Secretary,   Treasurer and the Chairpersons of the Standing Committee on Communications and Publicity and on Education, Advocacy and Service.

Role of the General Committee

The General Committee:

  • Approves the strategic plan, annual work plan and budget
  • Sets, monitors and reviews policy for the Network
  • Sets Network fees
  • Carries out/ oversees the day-to- day operations of the Network, including  the work of Committees
  • Ensures new General Committee members are oriented to their posts
  • Appoints members to the Network Committees
  • Determines the time, place and agenda of Annual and Special Meetings
  • Appoints ad hoc committees with specific timelines and tasks
  • Cancels  the membership of an individual
  • Terminates the membership of an individual
  • Calls a Special meeting of the members
  • Ensures fundraising initiatives are undertaken.

General Committee members may serve two consecutive terms of 2 years in any one post.

Duties of the Officers

Duties of the BNLN Chair

  • Preside at all meetings of the General Committee, Executive Committee, and annual and  special meetings of the Network
  • Serve as the Network spokesperson
  • Respond to, facilitate or refer network inquiries
  • Delegate duties to other Executive Committee members as necessary and appropriate

Duties of the BNLN Vice-chair

  • Serve as Chair when the Chair is not available
  • Represent the Network when the Chairperson is not available
  • Undertake other duties as assigned

Duties of the Secretary

  • In association with the Chair, prepare the agenda for General Committee meetings, the Annual General Meeting and any Special General meeting
  • Prepare, respond to, and issue general correspondence
  • Send out notices for meetings of the General Committee, AGM and Special meetings
  • Keep and disseminate minutes of the General Committee, AGM and Special meetings
  • Receive and preserve reports and related documents from the Network Committees and all other meetings
  • Send out notices of elections
  • Assist the Organizing Secretary as needed
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.

Duties of the Network Organizing Secretary

  • Send out membership notices
  • Receive membership applications and funds and sends fees to the Treasurer
  • Send out membership cards for new members and those renewing
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate lists of members
  • Select the venue for all Network meetings, including meetings of standing and ad hoc committees, and ensure all logistics are in place
  • Implement assigned aspects of the elections process for General Committee membership.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.

Duties of the Treasurer

The Network Treasurer shall:

  • Receive all monies on behalf of the Network, including processing of dues
  • Disburse monies for all expenses authorized by the  General Committee
  • Issue receipts
  • On behalf of the Finance Committee, submit financial reports of income and expenditures to the General Committee twice yearly and as necessary
  • Keep separate bookkeeping accounts for any product sales, sponsorships, grants or other donations.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.

STANDING COMMITTEES

The Network has 3 Standing Committees:

  • Finance
  • Communicationand Publicity
  • Education, Advocacy and Service

The Finance Committee

The Finance Committee is made up of 5 persons – the Chair is the Treasurer while the other members are appointed by the General Committee and serve for 2 years. The Committee functions are to:

  • Develop the annual budget for consideration by the General Committee
  • Develop fundraising proposals
  • Recommend to the General Committee any changes in the annual membership fees
  • Review and present financial statements to the General Committee twice a year
  • Ensure sound, accurate and timely management of Network accounts
  • Recommend to the General Committee a chartered accountant to undertake an audit of Network finances every three (3) years
  • Assist in preparation for the audit and undertake any follow up as directed by the General Committee
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Network, Governmental, and grant financial management              and reporting requirements
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the General Committee.

The Communications and Publicity Standing Committee

The Communications and Publicity Standing Committeeis made up of seven (7) members.  The Committee Chair is elected by the Network members while the others are appointed by the General Committee for a period of 2 years.The Committee functions are to:

  • Solicit membership
  • Prepare materials for publication and/or posting on website
  • Develop Press Releases
  • Keep the website content current
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the General Committee
  • Work closely with the Organizing Secretary who may be an exofficio member of the committee.

Education, Advocacy and Service Standing Committee

The Education, Advocacy and Service Standing Committee iscomposed of seven members. The Committee Chair is elected by the Network members while the others are appointed by the General Committee for a period of 2 years.The Committee functions are to:

  • Plan the program for the education portion of the Annual General Meeting
  • Organize, and at times deliver, training sessions for members
  • Undertake research on behalf of the Network
  • Develop and administer the Network Mentoring  program
  • Undertake advocacy to improve the welfare of nurse leaders and emerging leaders
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the General Committee.
